September kicked off with a rainy weather. Not complaining because I really could use a cooler weather. My 17 year-old self who lived for summertime would roll her eyes, but I’d take rainy days over hot ones now, thank you very much.
This side of the world, entering the “ber” months practically means Christmas season. Just last night, a radio station played three Christmas songs in a row. At past three in the morning. If that isn’t the true spirit of Christmas in September, I don’t know what is. 😆
While I love Christmas, I am also pretty excited about Halloween. 👻 🎃 As a horror fan, I’m looking forward to all the Halloween specials, both local and global. I have watched a few horror Korean dramas (also known as “kdramas”) and a recent good one is “Revenant.” It only has 12 episodes and the storyline is really good. Plot twists were done well, too. I would erase my memory just to watch it for the first time all over again. Here are some horror recommendations:
If you’re into webtoons, I’ve written about series that are perfect for reading during Halloween. (Or any time, if you’re a horror fan like me.)
That one time I tried a Kpop diet
This happened years ago and I was at a time in my life when I wanted to do things because I was utterly bored. So I bleached my hair and went blonde AND tried the Kpop diet for four days. The latter was supposed to go for five days, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. I figured four days was enough. What surprised me was finding out I lost 2 kg after four days. Turns out it was effective. However, I don’t recommend doing this at a long length of time. Healthy and balanced meals are always best.
For those curious, here’s what I had everyday for four days:
- Breakfast – sweet potato, fruit, soy milk
- Lunch 1 – chicken breast, 1/2 cup brown rice, fruit
- Lunch 2 – chicken breast, fruit
- Dinner – green salad with dressing of choice, fruit
My current favorite kdramas
Another genre I love besides horror is romantic comedy. My kdrama girl heart is bursting at the seams because they’ve been releasing such great ones recently. My two current favorites from that genre are:
Destined With You
A hotshot lawyer, Jang Shin Yu, is haunted by a curse and the only who can get rid of it is Lee Hong Joo, a nice civil servant who is very passionate about her job but leads a lonely life. When these two meet… 😂 Just when I thought the OTP at “Behind Your Touch” couldn’t get any more weird and hilarious, I get these two.
“Destined With You” is the perfect mix of romcom and supernatural. We have an enemies-to-lovers trope. We have a book of spells. We have Hong Joo performing a love spell for her romantic interest in the office and then Shin Yu messing it up, making it tricky for everyone involved, including Hong Joo’s love interest and Shin Yu’s ex-girlfriend.
This kdrama has released 4 episodes out of 16. It airs every Wednesday and Thursday, and is available to watch on Netflix. Whether it’s your first time to watch a kdrama or you think you’ve watched them all and hit a slump, try this one. I was pleasantly surprised and there wasn’t an episode that didn’t make me laugh. 🙂
Behind Your Touch
What do you get when a simple-minded veterinarian and a demoted detective get together to solve cases? Hilarious scenes. Tons of them. 😂
Ye Bun is a vet who suddenly develops psychometric power during one of her house calls. Jang Yeol is a detective from Seoul who was forced to work in the small town where Ye Bun lives. He would do anything to go back to Seoul. Once he learns of Ye Bun’s power, he wastes no time in getting her to help him solve cases. The only catch is that Ye Bun’s psychometric power only works when she touches butts. 😂
It isn’t just the leads that make this series so enjoyable to watch. The other characters – Ye Bun’s aunt and best friend, the new guy in town who runs a convenience store, Jang Yeol’s team at the police station, etc. – also make everything hilarious. This series is so unserious and funny but still able to deliver its plot well.
And yes, there’s murder in the storyline. I personally don’t trust that new guy, even if he’s good-looking and loves cats. (Fun fact: His character is being played by EXO member and leader, Suho.) Ye Bun’s best friend, Bae Ok See, is developing feelings for Jang Yeol. She’s another character to watch out for, but for a completely different reason. 🙃 If you’re up for something light, silly, and hilarious, I highly recommend this kdrama.
I recommend:
- Cassidoo – Not only is her website aesthetically pleasing (I’m a sucker for minimal designs and typewriter fonts), but she just exudes a fun vibe. She’s a software engineer and her newsletter shares cool things in the world of web development. (Of course I subscribed.)
- Sikodiwa – Carl touches on fascinating topics like psychology and the spirit. He has created really great articles, like “Father Bu’s Cases: Quezon City Poltergeist” and “Paranormal Phenomena in the Philippines.”
And that wraps up today’s post. I wish you fair folks a fine September. ✨
