Kdrama report: Mafia game gone wrong, multiple lives, and time travel

How’s your January going? Mine’s okay, I guess. Sometimes, it doesn’t sink in yet that it’s already 2024. Or maybe it’s just me. Does time seem to fly faster the older one gets?

I’ve been taking things easy on my creative/passion projects. I know I’ve been working too much and too hard, because the number of unread emails in my (personal) inbox shows that. Burnout is real, folks. 10/10 do not recommend. 😅 Now let’s talk kdramas, shall we?

A mafia game gone wrong, dying and then living multiple times, and time travel – For starters!

Move over, revenge marriage. Here comes some high school kids whose mafia game goes wrong during their retreat, getting a painful punishment from Death, and going back in time after getting killed by the person you trusted the most!

“Perfect Marriage Revenge” recently wrapped up and the ending was sweet and happy. It was pretty satisfying to see all the villains get what they deserve. The main leads, Yi Joo and Do Guk, had their cute happy ending as well. After everything they’ve been through, it gave me so much joy seeing their story unfold during the last few minutes of the final episode. If you want a quick but satisfying watch that has drama and romance, don’t pass on this kdrama. The villains were unforgiving and the main leads fought their demons well. It was simply enjoyable to watch.

“Night Has Come” Kdrama

My memories of a retreat during high school always meant praying, deepening the bond of our class, late night talks with classmates when we were supposed to be sleeping, and food that was edible and forgettable. There wasn’t a single retreat that I went home full of energy, because I stayed up late all night.

“Night Has Come” held a different kind of retreat, though. One that I would hate – HATE! – to be a part of. Imagine being forced to participate in a mafia game where you need to fight for your life. And guess what? They mean that literally. 😭

I’m not gonna lie. Watching it was very stressful for me and it could’ve had a better ending. But did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I watch it again someday in the future? Absolutely yes.

“Death’s Game” Kdrama

As if watching “Night Has Come” wasn’t stressful enough, I just had to go and watch “Death’s Game.” If I thought the former already made me feel weak and queasy because of all the killings, then it’s a child’s play compared with the latter.

The story kicks off with Yi Jae, who is down on his luck in life. When he decides to take his own life, that’s when he meets Death and his life (multiple lives) are never the same again. Good God. Are they never the same again.

Death gives Ye Ji 13 other lives to live, only for him to end up dying differently each time, more painful than the one before it. BUT if he manages to not get himself killed in one of those 13 lives, then he gets to live that life.

I love how each life that Ye Ji lives is so vastly different from the others and yet interconnected in some ways. At the center of all those lives is the evil chaebol, Park Tae Woo. That man became Ye Ji’s reason to live, in a way. He wants to catch Tae Woo and make him pay for his sins, which includes his girlfriend getting killed.

It was one heck of a ride watching “Death’s Game”, but it was worth it. The last episode made me cry so much and the ending was nicely done. If you’re up for something exciting and thrilling, but at the same time touching, then I recommend you watch this kdrama. All eight episodes of it are perfect. No throwaways.

“Marry My Husband” Kdrama

I read the webtoon first and fell in love with it. When I learned that there will be a kdrama version, I was screaming with excitement. Four episodes in and I am hooked!

Kang Ji Won is definitely a people pleaser who is not in the right company, even when she has her best friend and husband. Especially when she has them both in her simple life. My heart went out to her character. She’s an average, simple person just doing her best living her life as a wife, a daughter-in-law, a friend, and an employee/colleague. She doesn’t deserve to be treated so horribly and unfairly by the two people she trusts the most.

I cheered for her when she started handling things differently in her second life. Her husband, Min Hwan, and best friend, Soo Min, are both baffled by her change. It’s as if the Ji Won they know (and manipulated and gaslighted) is gone and in her place is a completely different person.

While Ji Won was figuring out what she needs to do in her second life (she got sent back in time to 10 years ago), her superior, Yoo Ji Hyuk, seems… odd. She can’t put a finger at it, but he’s been acting strange. Even stranger, Ji Won finds herself gravitating towards him. What is Ji Hyuk up to? How will Ji Won handle Min Hwan and Soo Min this time?

“Marry My Husband” only has four episodes as I publish this post. New episodes air every Monday and Tuesday. I can’t wait for Ji Won’s new chance at life to unfold and see how her relationship with Ji Hyuk progresses. I also can’t wait to see what she’ll do with Min Hwan and Soo Min.

I have other ongoing kdramas that I’m watching, including “My Man is Cupid.” That one is my current favorite. It has a serial killer in it and an unsolved mystery. If you know me, you already know that it’s a kdrama right up my alley.

We’re already on the halfway mark of 2024’s first month. How are things going for you? Did you make some New Year’s resolutions? I didn’t. I tried before and it just isn’t for me. 😅 But hey. Whatever floats your boat, right? If resolutions are your jam, then I’m happy for you. I think we all need to do what we can to help ourselves become better people. Not just better people, but kinder ones as well. I think the world needs more kindness.
