June report: This kdrama girl may have languished in creativity but there is hope

Half of the year already done and over with. I am both thrilled and down about it. Thrilled because the “ber” months are near. This means Christmas holiday is getting nearer and nearer each day I wake up. I’m also feeling down about it because it means that 2022 is also getting nearer and nearer to being done and over with. Time flies when you’re getting old. The good news is that June this year brought a number of kdramas that made my kdrama fangirl heart oh so happy.

Nice ideas but they still live in my head

I started this year with a pet project or two or 9128983 that I was very excited about: The revamp of my newsletter, the story I’ve been obsessing about, writing, web designs to add to my portfolio, etc. So much ideas, so little time. I am happy to report that at least one came to fruition: Ramyeon and Reviews – my kdrama website. If you love kdramas, too, please check it out. It’s very new but I plan to add more to it. Also there’s a voting going on. Feel free to cast your votes. I’d love it if you do. Thanks.

The birth of a novel

I’m a horror fan. I love anything horror. *awkward pause* Well, excluding the slasher stype. “Hostel”, “Wrong Turn”, and the likes? No, thank you. But give me anything supernatural like “Metamorphosis”, “Wishing Stairs”, “Sweet Home”, “The Cursed”, and “The Guest” and I’ll happily watch them, even all alone. (Okay maybe not so much with “Metamorphosis” and “The Guest.” I need to pluck up more courage for those.)

But I digress. So I’m a horror fan but this story I’ve been working on forever and ever is a romcom. Without even a hint of horror. Sure, there are references of the supernatural but the story itself is romcom. The tropes found in it are contract marriage and enemies-to-lovers/hate-to-love. There is no Special SnowflakeTM or Not Like the Other GirlsTM. In fact this story is very… not so complicated. It’s the one story I’ve been trying to complete ever since I finished a horror one last 2015, I think? So yeah. It’s been years. I wanted to get back to the swing of things and just write. No pressure. Just write what I want. Otherwise, if I strive for perfection, if I keep chewing my lip over what others might think when they read it, then I’ll never get this story done. My fingers wouldn’t be flying across the keyboard if I stop having fun with writing.

Kdrama report: “The King of Pigs” is gripping and rough and well worth watching

I stumbled across this kdrama accidentally and I was more than happy when it happened. “The King of Pigs” tells the story of former classmates Kyung Min and Jong Suk. The former had begun killing people while the latter a detective chases after him. Together with another detective, Kang Jin A, he tries to solve the mystery behind Kyung Min’s hatred and violence. He finds himself revisiting the school violence that happened 20 years ago, where he and Kyung Min were involved.

I like this kdrama because it’s interesting and heartbreaking. The school violence mentioned above was infuriating and my heart went out to the victims. I know bullying happens in real life, which makes it all the more heartbreaking. There is so much tension and emotions in this kdrama. As each episode wrapped up, it made me curious to know what really happened all those years ago. Detective Jong Suk, while seemingly upright and all for justice, doesn’t strike me as innocent. Not by a long shot. There’s a lot to unpack regarding that school violence 20 years ago and that’s what makes the story intriguing.

Miscellany

It’s been raining here the past few days and I realize that as much as I used to hate rainy days I love them now. Maybe it’s because I no longer have to commute to work.

I keep coming back to this Japanese restaurant because their enoki mushrooms wrapped in beef + gyudon rice bowl = perfection. Pair it with watermelon shake and I am in heaven.

I splurged on a slice of cake from this fancy schmancy place called Wild Flour and I have yet to find out tonight after eating it if I made the right decision. (P.S. Their pastas and pastries are awesome.)

The kdramas that were recently aired (and one has ended) are making me look forward to the weekdays. I talk about some of those kdramas here.

The week in photo

I hope you’re having one fine weekend. And that we all get a better time during the second half of the year. And remember: The moon is beautiful. It’s free to glance up at it once in a while and bask in its wonder while you let your thoughts carry you somewhere else
